Keyword Research
Keyword research is one of the most important parts of SEO. Keywords are those particular terms your potential customers would use when looking for your product or service on the internet. Keywords are likely to be highly related to your business. For example, if your business is a luxury hotel in St Lucia, you might target keywords such as St Lucia Resorts, St Lucia Holiday, etc. There are many free tools to use for keyword research like Google Keyword Tool, SEM Rush, Word tracker etc.
The content of your website
Once you have decided on your target keywords, you need to incorporate them into your websites content. Both search engine crawlers and human beings like reading quality content which has useful information. You can repeat the same keyword in the same content 2 or 3 times. Using the keyword in the first and the last sentence is important. You content should not be lower than 300 and higher that 700 words.
Web page optimisation
Do not rely on flash for your site, use HTML that incorporates Flash and put the keywords in the website’s Title and Meta Description. For example if you are a resort specialising in yoga holidays in St Lucia your page title could be “yoga retreats and yoga holidays in St Lucia”. The important thing is including your keywords close to the beginning of the title. You should also use your keywords in the URL and header tags i.e. you H1, H2, H3 and H4 tags.
Article Distribution
Create quality articles about your products and or services then submit them into as many article submission and press release websites with appropriate anchor texts that are based around your keywords. This means that when these websites get crawled by search engines, your webpage, which is linked via anchor text to your site, is cached.
Alternatively, you can create your own blog to submit your articles. For example, if you are a holiday resort promoting weddings and honeymoons in the Caribbean, your blog can have some information about the legal procedure for a Caribbean wedding, maybe some comments from your previous customers, incentive pictures etc.
Social Bookmarking
It is very important to join all the major social bookmarking websites, such as Delicious, Digg, Folkd etc. and being actively involved with them. You can bookmark your own articles and share your bookmarks with your friends. Similar to the technique above, this will create a backlink to your site.
Social Media Channels
If you want to stay ahead of your competitors, you have to embrace the wind of change that is social media. Interact with social media channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin, Youtube etc. Search engines use links from social media sites such as these when calculating ranking positions.
Twitter- how to use it to boost your ranking
Twitter user name: Don’t exceed 10 characters if you can, and use abbreviations for your brand name combined with your targeted keywords. For example, if your business is Hotel St Lucia, then, Htl_StLucia would make a good Twitter username.
Use your real site/blog URL- If you do need to shorten it, use a good URL shorting tool.
Twitter biography- Google uses Twitter Bio content as the meta description for your Twitter profile so create an eye-catching, keywords rich Twitter Bio.
Constantly use keywords in your Tweets, especially in the first 40 characters of them.
Twitter Hashtags- They can be created by prefixing a keyword with a ‘#’.They act as keywords and allow other Twitter users, who are interested in the same topic, to discover your tweets, which might lead to a retweet.
